Magnify your trading power with margin trading

Is your lack of holding power stopping you from trading the short-term volatility of the equity markets? You can now increase your trading capacity using Contracts for Difference (CFD) trades. CFDs are traded on margin, which allows you to trade an underlying asset by paying for only a fraction of the full value of the asset.

High leverage
At City Index, our initial margin requirement is as low as 10% for stock CFDs. The high leverage means that you as a trader will gain much greater exposure to the equities that you are trading on. At the same time, you will be freeing up your available capital for other investment targets.

Hedging instrument
You can also use CFDs to hedge against price declines in your long-term investment portfolio. CFDs help to offset the paper losses of your existing portfolio assets with the profits that you make when you short the portfolio assets in a falling market.

Volatile markets
With CFDs, you can trade on either rising or falling markets. This allows you to make profits by taking a short position when a market is falling. Conversely, you could make losses if you take a short position in a rising market.

SIA Engineering Company management to take pay cut

Faced with tough operating conditions, the management of SIA Engineering Company (SIAEC) is taking a wage cut of up to 20 per cent from June 1. The company said chief executive officer William Tan will have his wages slashed by 20 per cent, while senior vice-presidents, vice-presidents and managers will take cuts of 14, 12 and 10 per cent respectively.

In a gesture of support for management's wage cut and the company's other cost-saving initiatives, the company's board of directors have volunteered to waive 20 per cent of the fees payable for FY2008/2009, after approval of these fees by shareholders at the coming annual general meeting on July 24.

'This is in line with measures being taken by the company to reduce costs in response to the current weak business environment,' SIAEC said in a statement. In all, 89 management staff will be affected. The reductions will yield a quarterly saving of some $340,000.

But the funniest of all, is the "jobless" guy above!

Singapore + MIT = 4th university ; Degree courses by Polytechnic ; Medical School at NTU

There has been a huge changes in the Singapore tertiary education:
1) Singapore is going to partner with MIT and a Chinese University for the 4th university.
2) More and more polytechnic will offer degree courses.
3) NTU is going to have the 3rd medical school in Singapore.

4th University

THE as-yet-unnamed fourth university to open in 2011 has secured the world's No. 1 technological university as its partner: the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States.

MIT professors will be in charge of developing the science and technology curriculum and use design to integrate the teaching of various disciplines. They will also teach. The university will be kept small with an undergraduate population of about 4,000 at a still-undisclosed temporary location. It will move to upper Changin on 2013.

A second partner - a Chinese university - will be announced at the end of the year. The university will have two partners - one from the US and the other from China - and will be focused mainly on the disciplines of science, engineering, information systems and architecture.

Prospective students at the fourth university will have to fork out more in tuition fees compared to their counterparts at NTU, the National University of Singapore and Singapore Management University.

Degree at Polytechnic

And more polytechnic students will be able to obtain degrees in Singapore. In the past, polytechnic students who wanted a degree in optometry had to go overseas. Now, they can apply for a place in the University of Manchester, which is partnering Singapore Polytechnic to offer its degree programme here.

Another six to eight reputable foreign universities are likely to offer degree programmes in local polytechnics by 2015. The newly set-up Singapore Institute of Applied Technology will establish tie-ups with foreign universities in areas such as engineering, applied sciences, digital media and health sciences. The institute will be a distinct entity within the Education Ministry, and will help to plan, manage and implement the different degree programmes. By 2015, there should be places for about 2,000 full-time students and 1,500 part-time students every year.

3rd Medical School at NTU

A THIRD medical school, which taps science and technology, is coming up in Singapore. It will be run by the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), which has been asked to submit a proposal for such a set-up in the next six to 12 months. NTU was picked as it had 'built up its biological and biomedical sciences base in recent years', the Education Ministry (MOE) announced yesterday.

The new school will take in about 100 to 150 students each year, adding to the 310 who presently graduate each year from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School.

So far I have recevied 174 votes on their 2008 bonus so far. To my surprise, there are still quite a number of lucky guys that receive 2 months or more bonus (including the 13th AWS). So lets see the results:

Retrenched - 12%
Pay Cut - 0% (nearly zero....)
No bonus - 16%
1 month (13th AWS) - 31%
2 months - 10%
more than 2 months - 28%

What Happens If You Lose Your Job Tomorrow

Someone asked yesterday, "If every stock that Adam invests in crashes tomorrow, will he lose everything and become a millionaire turned failure?". The answer is "NO". Adam has experienced numerous setbacks like any of us, but each time he loses a dime, he makes a million or more. This is because he has developed the mindset and competencies to bounce from failures to greater successes.

Using the same skill sets and strategies, Adam designed and built his $20million profitable businesses with merely $8,000. What's more amazing is, he launched his businesses during a recession. Ask yourself these questions, "What happens to me if I lose my job tomorrow?" or "Can I afford to lose in more than 80% of my investments?"

What will you learn during this workshop?

1. How to Take a Business Start-up to a Million Dollars in 18 months
2. How to Develop a Powerful Brand and Become the Market Leader
3. How to Build an Automated Business System and Expand it Internationally
4. How to Master the Art of Business Cashflow Management
5. How to Acquire Powerful Marketing Strategies that will beat the Competition
6. How to Build a Championship Team of Employees to Drive Double-Digit Growth

Date: 13th May 2009, Wednesday

4 in 10 laid off in 2008 were foreigners

The number of layoffs during 2008 is the highest since 2003 and is double the figure for 2007. And the proportion of 4 out of 10 laid off are foreigners is a 10-year high ratio as reported in Straits Times. And this explained why Oct 2008, Malaysia Minister says "Prepare to lose jobs in Singapore" .

Fact:

- A total of 16,880 workers lost their jobs during 2008.
- Of these, 13,920 were retrenched (4,140 were foreigners).
- Another 2,970 had their contracts terminated prematurely (2,380 were foreigners).

Why foreigners?

'A lot of foreigners are employed in lower-skilled service industries which slowed down in the later part of last year, so they have been affected,' said Nanyang Technological University economist Choy Keen Meng.

History:

- 32,800 were retrenced during 1998
- 27,570 were retrenced during 2001

Guess this may explained why the housing price is not dropping fast as compared with previous down turn. And check out the lastest Singapore Jobless rate of 4.8% - which is going to worsen.

Do you know that there is a short ETF traded on SGX

Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) are fast gaining popularity with investors worldwide. So fast, in fact, that they are one of the few product classes that not only weathered the current financial storm, but bucked the trend to report impressive growth figures in 2008.

Here in our own backyard, investors are spoilt for choice, with a total of 30 ETFs listed on the Singapore Exchange (SGX). And now, there is an ETF specially suited for a bear market: an S&P 500 Short ETF. With a short ETF that you can easily buy and sell like shares, you now have a convenient and transparent way to take advantage of situations where markets are falling.

Take, for example, the db x-trackers S&P 500 Short ETF that is listed and traded on SGX. The performance of this ETF mirrors the performance of the S&P 500 Inverse Index that is calculated by Standard & Poor’s, the company behind the popular S&P 500 Index.

Have more questions? Join us at the following seminar to find out the mechanics behind the db x-trackers S&P 500 Short ETF!
