Singapore + MIT = 4th university ; Degree courses by Polytechnic ; Medical School at NTU

There has been a huge changes in the Singapore tertiary education:
1) Singapore is going to partner with MIT and a Chinese University for the 4th university.
2) More and more polytechnic will offer degree courses.
3) NTU is going to have the 3rd medical school in Singapore.

4th University

THE as-yet-unnamed fourth university to open in 2011 has secured the world's No. 1 technological university as its partner: the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States.

MIT professors will be in charge of developing the science and technology curriculum and use design to integrate the teaching of various disciplines. They will also teach. The university will be kept small with an undergraduate population of about 4,000 at a still-undisclosed temporary location. It will move to upper Changin on 2013.

A second partner - a Chinese university - will be announced at the end of the year. The university will have two partners - one from the US and the other from China - and will be focused mainly on the disciplines of science, engineering, information systems and architecture.

Prospective students at the fourth university will have to fork out more in tuition fees compared to their counterparts at NTU, the National University of Singapore and Singapore Management University.

Degree at Polytechnic

And more polytechnic students will be able to obtain degrees in Singapore. In the past, polytechnic students who wanted a degree in optometry had to go overseas. Now, they can apply for a place in the University of Manchester, which is partnering Singapore Polytechnic to offer its degree programme here.

Another six to eight reputable foreign universities are likely to offer degree programmes in local polytechnics by 2015. The newly set-up Singapore Institute of Applied Technology will establish tie-ups with foreign universities in areas such as engineering, applied sciences, digital media and health sciences. The institute will be a distinct entity within the Education Ministry, and will help to plan, manage and implement the different degree programmes. By 2015, there should be places for about 2,000 full-time students and 1,500 part-time students every year.

3rd Medical School at NTU

A THIRD medical school, which taps science and technology, is coming up in Singapore. It will be run by the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), which has been asked to submit a proposal for such a set-up in the next six to 12 months. NTU was picked as it had 'built up its biological and biomedical sciences base in recent years', the Education Ministry (MOE) announced yesterday.

The new school will take in about 100 to 150 students each year, adding to the 310 who presently graduate each year from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School.
