Synopsis of Panel Discussion

A black swan is a highly improbable event with three principal characteristics: It is unpredictable; it carries a massive impact; and, after the fact, we concoct an explanation that makes it appear less random, and more predictable, than it was.

The astonishing success of Google, in example, was a black swan; so were Microsoft, YouTube, Facebook, and so many others. The central idea in this important concept is the very fact that for far too often we concentrate on things we already know and time and time again fail to take into consideration what we don’t know.

We are, therefore, unable to truly estimate opportunities, too vulnerable to the impulse to simplify, narrate, and categorize, and not open enough to rewarding those who can imagine the “impossible.”

Therefore, the principle question here is how does individuals despite what is knows of the current economic turmoil find the black swan that will create that massive impact to ride on after the storm is finally over? And, importantly, what is the environment or even mentality that is essential to “induce” a black swan phenomenon in all of us.

One thing to remember is that salary ranges are all very well, but the key to maximizing your compensation is about clearly demonstrating the benefits that you can bring to an organization. A well-documented performance which provides a prospective employer with quantitative results and shows him how you solved problems or accomplished tasks is pretty tough to argue with!
