Statistic of 2009 increment

I started a poll on "How much is your increment 2009", I received 172 votes so far. Well, nearly half of the people receive in increment if not pay cut. However, there are always some lucky guys (in fact not some, quite a lot, as 20%, that is 1/5), receive more than 6% increment (mainly more than 8%). Maybe I am too childish, should put the range wider, then see what is the higher range. So sad, why I am not in that range.

Pay Cut : 27 (15%)
0% : 83 (48%)
less than 2% : 12 (6%)
less than 4% : 15 (8%)
less than 6% : 3 (1%)
less than 8% : 3 (1%)
more than 8% : 28 (16%)

Job application in Twitter way - 140 character or less

With Twitter gets more and more popular, a Dutch job agency is asking job applicants to apply in 140 characters or less. Utrecht-based Energize is looking to hire an account manager and a strategic planner, and has designed an application form that looks exactly like a page on Twitter, including an empty text field with maximum 140 characters.

Candidates enter a short message—their "twillicitatie", describing why they're the person for the job, plus their email address and Twitter username. Uploading a resume is optional. For privacy reasons, Energize won't publicly tweet the applicant's message. So you really got to know how to express yourself well in a very concise manner.

And do you know that, there is also a dating in Twitter way. Just like the demo above. Give a short introduction, and maybe you can find a partner for yourself through Twitter.

You may refer to It is all about Twitters - for beginners to advanced users to learn more about Twitter.

6200 jobs disappear in Q1 2009 - unemployment rate of 4.8%

Singapore's labour market saw its first quarterly contraction in nearly six years with total employment falling by 6,200 (CNA). This means the number of workers who left their jobs outstripped those who got hired.

Construction: +8,3000 (vs +10,700 in previous quarter)
Services: +7,500 (vs +17,300 in previous quarter)

The gain mainly from community, social and personal services, supported by public sector hiring. However, services industries with external exposure like hotels and restaurants went into the red and netted 2700 jobs, while financial services saw a net loss of 1,900 jobs.

Earnings also fell, unemployment rose and people took a longer time to get another job. The result was an unemployment rate of (Strait Times):

Singapore Residents: 4.8 per cent (95,700 unemployed Singaporeans and permanent residents, one-third more than the 71,800 in December)
Total Population, foreigners included: 3.3 per cent (compared to 2.5 per cent in December last year).

But should we complaint that much? Look at the following photos suppose to be the job fair at China (even worst than our PC Show):

In the first three months of this year, a total of 12,760 workers were laid off, a 36 per cent rise from the last three months of 2008. This included the early termination of employment contracts.

Average income of low-wage workers up over past two years

Low-wage workers are:
- who form 20 per cent of the workforce in Singapore
- who earned S$1,200 or less in gross monthly income

And they are earning more now compared to what they did in 2006, the number of low-wage workers has also gone down.

- Salary of S$1,200 in 2006 saw their salary go up by 9% to S$1,310 last year
- The number of low-income employees has fallen from 360,000 in 2006 to 300,000 in 2008.

But on the foreigners, Mr Gan says:

"To keep the foreigners out may be very appealing to the locals, but it may not be the right approach for Singapore in the long term because it will then undermine the basic economic fundamentals. And if we do so, it will affect our long-term economic position."
As reported at Channel News Asia.

Business Finance for Engineers

In this knowledge-based economy, it is no longer sufficient to be proficient in one professional specialisation alone. Whatever the shape and size of a business, they all have one thing in common, i.e., they hope to make money. A major factor in determining success is the ability of management to control its finance. The objective of this short course is to demystify the process of business finance and to help the participants to turn their business from a potential casualty of the ‘death valley curve’ into an efficient and profit-making success story.

The course has been designed for the understanding of the framework which enables managers and professionals to focus on the business financial skills they need to develop. The short course also serves as a reference point and source of ideas and information through which the participants can practise learning needs and identify appropriate activities.

No mid-year bonus for Singapore public civil servants this year

As reported in CNA, over 60,000 civil servants in Singapore will not be getting any mid-year annual variable component this year. The Public Service Division said this is due to the uncertain economic outlook.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry has maintained this year's GDP growth forecast at -6 to -9 per cent.

The decision of not having a mid-year payment for civil servants, together with cuts made previously, will see annual civil service salaries this year drop by six per cent to 21 per cent compared to 2008. Those in senior positions will receive the largest reduction.

'The annual pay of civil servants is pegged to pay levels in the private sector. The AVC is a component in the flexible wage structure that is adjusted to reflect economic conditions,' said the statement.

Appraisal Vs Resignation

A newly-joined trainee engineer asks his boss " What is the meaning of appraisal ? "
Boss : " Do you know the meaning of resignation ? "

Trainee : " Yes, I do. "
Boss : " So let me make you understand what an appraisal is by comparing it with resignation. "

Appraisal

  • In an appraisal meeting they will speak only about your weakness, errors and failures.

  • During an appraisal you may need to cry and beg for even a 10% pay hike.

  • During an appraisal, they will deny promotion saying that you did not meet the expectation, you don't have leadership qualities, and that you had several drawbacks in reaching objective/goal.

  • There is a 90% chance of not getting any significant incentives after appraisal.

Resignation
  • In a resignation meeting they will speak only about your strengths, past achievements and success.

  • In a resignation meeting you can easily demand ( or get more without asking ) more than 50-60% pay-hike !

  • During resignation, they'll say you are the core member of the team; that you are the vision of the company, and so " How can you go ? "; you have to take the project on your shoulders and lead your juniors to success.

  • There is a 90% chance of getting an immediate pay-hike after you put in your resignation.

Trainee : " Yes, boss, good enough. Now I know what to do. When you are about to do my appraisal, I will resign. "
